And eh no, if you clicked here thinking that we're talking about Good Ol' Scott Pilgrim then I've totally mislead you. Granted though, his movie was pretty good I've heard. Never watched it myself though, maybe someday.

Anyway we're talking about American Pilgrim's of Education! Scratching their way to a no mans land in their journey for the holy place. And that holy place is a chance to be one of the top dogs not in military, but on the SAT.

For my American buddies, here is a pretty interesting yet visually appealing infographic about just where things are headed for your shool days down the road. It's based on just a year ago so it's pretty recent. Isn't it so cool to see how the U.S. stacks up in the good and bad? (or for this site, I'd say stats up. Ahem moving on) and if anything, this baby was hand drawn by the guys over at onlineeducation.net. Warning: You may be shocked if the U.S. holds dear to you.

Your College Degree vs The Unemployment Rate: Is Your Degree Really Paying Off?

A little more than a month ago, a new report was made by the Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce. Through their findings, it is discovered that the job that you choose will effect how close you are to major unemployment. These rates also vary widely depending on the major. So the real question is...

Well according to an article from The Washington Post, individuals who have the hardest time getting hired at a company had degrees in:

1. Architecture (with 13.9% unemployment)
2. The Arts (with 11.1% unemployment)
3. The Humanities (with 9.4% unemployment)

Those interested in architecture are at the greatest risk.

On the contrary, those who had the lowest rate of unemployment had degrees in:

1. Health (with 5.4% unemployment)
2. Education (with 5.4% unemployment)
3. Agriculture and Natural Resources (with 7% unemployment)

Non-surprisingly, doctors and educators have little to worry about.

A little surprising fact is that business majors also do pretty well, with an unemployment average of only 7.4% with an exception being those interested in hospitality management (9.1%) thanks to the decline in tourism.

Coke vs Pepsi: Which One Is Really The Best?

Take it from the average consumer, Coke and Pepsi definitely taste the same. Many of us cannot even tell them apart if they don’t know which one they are drinking. However there are other people who are very adamant in their preference of either Pepsi or Coke. Which one do you prefer?

So some say that Pepsi is sweeter, others feel that Coke has crisper flavor so they like it better. Some prefer the aftertaste of one over the other. There are even those who prefer one brand when drinking from a can and the other from a bottle. Most people find it more difficult to tell them apart when they are served as a fountain drink in a restaurant. 


Whatever the case, It all comes down to your own personal taste preference. Or does it?

Both Coca Cola and Pepsi spend untold amounts of money in marketing and trying to create an emotional tie between their products and consumers (and we're talking billions here sparky). This ranges from the image they try to portray through their advertising, to sponsoring sporting and music events, TV shows, and so on. It seems as though in general, Pepsi targets their marketing to the younger generations and tries to brand themselves as the beverage of choice for them. Remember their slogan “The choice of a new generation”? When I think of a Pepsi ad I think of the Classic Michael Jackson commercial.

Back in the 80s and 90s and since, kids from around the globe looked up to Michael. Was this a smart choice to include him in Pepsi's "new generation" ads?

Or for our japanese folks, those hilarious Pepsi Man ads which are still stuck in my head to this day.

Pepsimaaaaannn! Yeah I had to add that in. Can you blame me?

It seems as though Coca Cola on the other hand aims their marketing towards our nostalgic side. Almost as though Coke is an emotional connection to our youth or the good old days. This would definitely be an effective marketing tactic towards the middle-age and older generations. There are two campaigns that come to mind when I think about Coca Cola advertising. The first is the classic “I’d like to buy the world a Coke” jingle. The second is the Santa Clause themed commercials they use around the holidays. Both appeal to our sentimental sides and this seems to be an approach they like to take. 

It's no coincidence why they use our jolly red and white fellow to promote coke.

Just consider the huge popularity of retro Coca Cola merchandise and memorabilia if you doubt that their advertising can tug on your heart strings. The actual Coca Cola Bottle is a large part of that.

Down to the unique bottle design, coke strives to stand out from the rest.

Marketing and advertising are an integral part of the cola wars between Coke vs Pepsi. Both Coca Cola and Pepsi are smart enough to know that the beverage we choose to purchase may not always be based strictly on taste preference. It may be more subliminal than that. The fact that people can have such a strong preference between two such similar products shows how important and effective marketing is. There are of course those who really do favor the taste of either Coke or Pepsi, but you have to wonder how large of a role people’s sub-conscious emotional connection to their favorite cola plays into their choice.

Clean modern lines and popping colors help Pepsi's ads appeal to the youth.

In our 2012 ads, coke sends us a throwback with the adorable polar bear commercials from the 90s.

Both Coca-Cola and Pepsi are big time spenders when it comes to sponsoring sporting events, music events, TV shows and other high profile happenings. They realize that this can play a big role in the product selection with members of these audiences. 


You’ll notice that most of the events they choose to sponsor are highly emotional such as the Super Bowl or American Idol. This is no accident as an emotional connection to their products is what they are looking to create.

A pivotal aspect of the Coke vs Pepsi battle has to do with where their products are available. Think about restaurants for instance. Restaurants, stadiums, airlines, and other businesses will typically offer either Coke or Pepsi products, not both. So securing contracts with within these industries to feature their line of products is very important for the market share of Coke and Pepsi. Much research also goes into the strategy of vending machine placement and often contracts regarding that. In some locations both Coke and Pepsi will have vending machines, whereas other times there may be a contract involved guaranteeing one company sole placement. It even goes right down to schools. Coca Cola and Pepsi know that marketing to youth means long term business, and having vending machines in schools serves this purpose.

Hello viewers, I'm pretty pepped up about this particular one. Mostly because I've just finished drinking both of these drinks during my little brunch, but also because I'm excited to reveal to you one of the most extreme drinks that most (if not all) of us are familiar with to this day. And those drinks are Pepsi and Coca-Cola! And now for some brief stats of our competitors:

I also started to notice that the "biasness" of one versus the other may seem a little... Oh I dunno, bias. Therefore I will make this and future competitions fall under a series of different judgements. That way we can see exactly where one is stronger than the other and vise versa.

Both of these drinks will be judged on the following 5 stats:

1. Taste Quality and Likability
2. Gross Income per year
3. Brand Impact
4. Beverage Longevity + Lifespan
5. Final Judgement - Crowd Choice

For number 5, I ask you guys what you think the two carbonated drinks should be judged upon. The most popular statistic that gets voted will be included in the blog - How exciting! Hello viewers and welcome to another exciting (albeit chilly) day Extreme Statistics!

Okay so we've heard the things that beer has over coffee, and if you haven't heard the beef between these two bubbly behemoths, then I humbly suggest that you take a peek at Beer vs Coffee: Part 1 - Why Beer is Better and the prologue to hear the full story. But in all honestly, did we really hear the "full story?" Is beer really the better beverage? Well if you ask around, you may get some opinions to answer your question, perhaps a "coffee sucks" here and a "beers more fun" there. I'll let you decide, but in the meantime, here are 5 facinating facts proving why it is coffee that would be the apex predator in this liquid guzzling food chain.

Fact Number 1: Coffee Tastes Better.

• According to the professionals of beer taste and quality at Alabev, there are 14 general types of flavors, or styles rather, that beer would fall into. These range from Aromaic and Fruity to Foul and Bitter (which is what you usually get ripped off over from your local supermarket). All in all however, you can be sure that no matter what type of flavor you're given while downing your hop and yeast slush concoction, all will agree that beer can only settle for being an acquired taste. In laymens terms, "its gonna smell and it's gonna burn going down, you just have to learn how to deal with it if you need friends. And we all know you do." 

• On the other end of the spectrum, coffee boasts over it's skunky brotheren with more available flavors then the stars in the sky. It really is endless, and there are more varieties of coffee appearing everyday. Take for example this site who makes their money simply by selling flavored coffee. And if you still crave that bitterness, just drink stronger coffee. Good luck trying to find coffee-flavored beer though.

Fact Number 2: Coffee's More Widely Accepted.

• On my long and hard journey growing up in this world. I've never been asked my age, had to give some ID at any time of my life, nor questioned whether or not I hold any criminal records when purchasing a hot cup of java. Sounds ridiculous, but between the two drinks, I (oh and uh, this guy) would agree that there is much less of a hassle for trying to "smuggle out" some caffeine for your minor then it is for smuggling booze. Now granted, I'm sure there is a very good reason why little timmy shouldn't take a swig out of that can of BECK'S. And let's face it folks, fact - it's just plain wrong.

Fact Number 3: Coffee's Safer.

• You guys knew this was gonna come up sooner or later didn't you? Well if you didn't then perhaps you aren't aware of all the commercials and videos talking about drunk driving. And I don't need to tell you, it's proven that too much beer while driving puts your under the influence, which leads to deadly consequences. Since 1983, there's roughly 2 million arrests related to drunk driving in the US alone. Ask anyone how many arrests have been related to caffeine intoxication and you'll get the this answer - zero. Sheesh, and I didn't even get started on how beer alters your judgement. I rest my case.

Fact Number 4: Coffee Will Get You a Job Faster.

• Mark Suster from Both Sides of the Table hit's the nail on the coffin with this one (or in this case, the coffee cup on the espresso machine! - okay i'm sorry). Basically, taking your future employers out for a simple cup of coffee and having about 50 coffee meeting with these multiple companies will land you at around 10,000 hours that you would otherwise be doing straining your eyes on monster.com - or getting drunk wishing you had a job. It's a quick way to get yourself noticed. This blogger was one of the many who got a job in this way. Besides, the caffeine would help you become and appear more alert in the interview, versus the reverse effects for alcohol - or whether your employer offers one or not.

Fact Number 5: Coffee is easier to make.

• Not much needs to be said here, it's kinda self-explanatory. Now granted, I'm aware that there is no effective personal beer-making machines out there - whoops! Anyway, from powder to full brew, the average coffee pot will get you your steaming brown glory in just around 2-4 minutes, assuming you used a coffee maker, and even shorter if you prefer an espresso. On the fly and the moment you want it. For beer on the other hand, after you go through all the ridiculously demanding tasks of the brewing process. You know, like the carbonation, the fermenting, the hop boiling, the barley boiling, the - ow my brain! Well let's just say it this way. "You ain't getting no beer for atleast 2-3 more weeks!" The best machine I've seen for this job are from the boys at williamswarn. They boast on how their machine can get the job done in just seven days. I guess that's impressive. Coffee makers are easy to get and you can find some on amazon for just around $20 bucks. Probably a little cheaper than those clunkers you see at the bars. Oh and I should mention, williamswarn are willing to sell their prized contraption for a "measly" $5,666, plus an extra $32 for ingredients yippie!

So I gave you the data, the stats, the pros and cons of both the tall dark and handsome coffee, and the sexy, risque, adults only beer. But who is the real Beverage behemoth, for me I can't say. All in all they are drinks that have impacted what we consider a culture. But here I ask you. Which really is better. You decide! As for me, maybe I'll go on and get cold-drunk tonight with some buds, and help sooth the morning hangover with a cup of joe... maybe.
